| First Internet Page Uncovered
by Peter Stephens |
Peter Stephens, our roving reporter has uncovered what has to be the very first page that appeared on the Internet. More commonly known as ' The Gateway to the Internet' this page has been searched after for many years by experienced surfers and students alike. Today the Internet has grown to be the phenomenal success it is because of the creation of this very first page.
Like everything that has been created before, there has always had to be a place from where to start. After the Internet explosion of the 1990's and the addition of millions of more pages being added every year, the starting place was getting even more hidden from the public view. We decided to try and track down this piece of Internet history and put it back on show.
We were granted access to the archive of Arpranet, the current World Wide Web forerunner from where we started our quest.
The page gained cult status when in the early 1970's it was conceived and designed by what is widely known to be a member of the backroom staff at a private location. He name is unknown and will probably never be known unless he comes forward to claim his creation. It is believed that, during a short break when the technical and design team where away from their stations, he walked in and was seen creating what is now known as a webpage. It was then discovered that when written a certain way, data could be encoded and transferred to a remote machine. When accessed through another super computer this data would then require 'software' to decode the data and display it as a webpage. This paved the way for the invention of the 'Browser' which is today, what is used to surf and display the Internet.
So all we can say is click the link below to see the page itself.
